INTERVIEW: HitMusicPlus Interview With “New Indie Rock Band Inspiring Others to Follow Their Dreams”

We are Sonic Maven out of Colorado Springs and are very excited to release our debut single, Look at Me Now. Growing up, I always felt less than, unworthy even. This song was written from that perspective to inspire others to follow their dreams and forget the haters. It was written with the underdog in mind. The world changers who are too stubborn to quit and keep pushing forward. The ones who pursue their dreams.

Q: What got you into music and made you realize that it was your chosen path?
A: I (Bristan Keller, singer and guitarist)  started playing guitar when I was 7 years old by a man that became like a father to me. I had a rough childhood, and realized music was therapy for me at an early age. Some emotions are impossible to put words to, and music has always been a way to express those emotions more adequately. From an early age I knew music was my calling, and I am lucky enough to share my style with the world. Even if one person is impacted by our music, we can confidently say we helped make a small difference in a world with so much hate right now. That alone is worth the effort and the struggle in being an artist.

Q: Tell us about your new music (Song/EP/Mixtape/Album)? And what’s the story behind it?
A:  Like I said before, I had a rough childhood. My father left when I was young, and I blamed myself for it. I questioned why he would leave, and what I could have done better. My step-father was a cop and treated me like a criminal even after the day I turned 18. I joined active duty military and even in my career, I felt inadequate in my job because of many reasons I won’t go into. Even in my music, I always took criticism to heart. After many years, I realized my life was not getting any better with this perspective. Forget the haters, and take criticism as helpful criticism. Forget my dad(s), they were losers anyway and I’m better off without them. Forget all the people that looked down on my for whatever reason, because they’re not going anywhere either. Once I had this mind shift change, I saw real success.  The hope is this song inspires listeners to keep following their dreams no matter what the world thinks. No matter their upbringing. No matter their pedigree. We all have the power to change our future and one day say, Look at Me Now.

Q: What makes your music unique? How would you describe it? (genres/sub-genres)
A: Our music is unique because it is hard to describe what type of rock it is. We have heard feedback from many it falls into Garage Rock, Americana Rock, Post-Grunge Rock, Blues Rock, and even Pop-Rock.

Q: Who are your biggest music influences? And any particular artist/band you would like to collaborate with in the future?
A: Our biggest influences are The Black Keys, Arctic Monkeys, The White Stripes, and Royal Blood. We would be honored to collaborate with any artist/band, but especially excited about the thought with these.

Q: How long have you been in the music industry?
A: We formed in 2022, and are releasing our debut single on May 19, 2023.

Q: Which is the best moment in your musical career that you’re most proud of? (awards, projects or public performances etc.
A:  Since we are so new, releasing our single is our current most proud moment. We have heard a lot of positive feedback on how this song means something to people. In our opinion, there is no higher honor than that.

Q: How do you balance your music with other obligations – family, friends or work?
A: To be honest, this would have been much harder pre-Covid. However today, it is easier with so many people working from home. Even still, having healthy boundaries  up-front is critical.

Q: What advice would you give to aspiring musicians?
A: Keep following your dreams, honing your craft, and take criticism with a grain of salt. Music is extremely subjective, just as much if not more than food. Gordon Ramsey is one of the best chef’s in the world, and there are still people that don’t like some of his dishes. Recognize where you can improve when you receive feedback, but not at the sake of compromising on what makes you as an artist.

Q: If you had one message to give to your fans, what would it be?
A: Each one of us is unique is some way and has value. Find your passion and once you do, don’t ever stop despite what others tell you. You need something to express yourself, and the world needs to see or hear or experience it in some way.

Q: What’s next for you? Any upcoming projects?
A: We are working on an EP we are excited about that will be released in the beginning of 2024!
